MESSENGER Observations of Multiple Magnetic Energy Releases during Mercury’s Substorm

چکیده

Abstract Substorms are energy storage and dissipation processes that occur in planetary magnetospheres accompanied by numerous phenomena, such as magnetic dipolarizations, plasma sheet thinning thickening, flux ropes, plasmoid ejections. Recent MESSENGER observations have revealed substorm activity Mercury’s near magnetotail, with average durations of 2–3 minutes for both the growth expansion phases. Herein, we report spacecraft sporadic short-term during phase magnetotail. Three dipolarizations lasting ∼4 were detected manifested step-like enhancements northward component field. The field strength decreased each dipolarization, indicating an intermittent release energy. They arise owing to multiple pileup effects caused planetward bursty bulk flows ejected from distant magnetotail reconnections. Additionally, close proximity observed occurrence pulse-like fluctuations B y component. These new suggest substorm, can be local transient processes, although duration is much shorter than Earth.

MESSENGER observations of large dayside flux transfer events: Do they drive Mercurys substorm cycle?

The large-scale dynamic behavior of Mercury’s highly compressedmagnetosphere is predominantly powered by magnetic reconnection, which transfers energy and momentum from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. The contribution of flux transfer events (FTEs) at the daysidemagnetopause to the redistribution of magnetic flux in Mercury’s magnetosphere is assessed with magnetic field data acquired in o...

Multiple magnetic dipolarizations observed by THEMIS during a substorm

The magnetic field dipolarization in the vicinity of substorm onset and during substorm expansion phase during the period of 06:00–06:40 UT on 15 February 2008 is investigated with observations from multiple probes of THEMIS. It is found that the magnetic dipolarization at the substorm onset (the onset time was about 06:14 UT) was not accompanied by obvious magnetic disturbance and ion bulk spe...

Magnetotail energy dissipation during an auroral substorm

Violent releases of space plasma energy from the Earth's magnetotail during substorms produce strong electric currents and bright aurora. But what modulates these currents and aurora and controls dissipation of the energy released in the ionosphere? Using data from the THEMIS fleet of satellites and ground-based imagers and magnetometers, we show that plasma energy dissipation is controlled by ...

Observations of GPS scintillation during an isolated auroral substorm

This paper reports simultaneous observations of ionospheric scintillation during an auroral substorm that were made using an all-sky full-color digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (ASC) and a Global Positioning System (GPS) ionospheric scintillation and total electron content monitor (GISTM) in Tromsø (69.60 N, 19.20 E), Norway. On the night of November 19, 2009, a small substorm occurred ...

Distribution and compositional variations of plasma ions in Mercurys space environment: The first three Mercury years of MESSENGER observations

[1] We have analyzed measurements of planetary ions near Mercury made by the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS) over the first three Mercury years of orbital observations (25 March 2011 through 31 December 2011). We determined the composition and spatial distributions of the most abundant species in the regions sampl...
